It really is a shame. Sanitas used to mean that you were buying a fabric backed vinyl which was going to last for years in tough conditions. A Sanitas in a bath would resist steam and water. A Sanitas in a kitchen would stand up to grease. But since Sanitas has been perpetrated as a non woven by parent company Koroseal, it has become a shoddy ghost of its former self. If the non woven backing is saturated with water the inks practically fall off the material letting the backing show through. Check out this piece of Sanitas below. It was allowed to stand 10 minutes after pasting. I crumpled it into a ball and then wiped it with a sponge:
Unbelievable, right? Beware of this product. If you must hang it be sure to keep it dry. You must paste the wall and hang it dry unless you are looking for dire consequences.
But we are still left with the problem of water soaking. I hung this particular material in a bath with a vanity that would allow water to come into contact with it. If the customer wipes around the sink after water wicks up how happy do you think she will be? What do you think will happen when she washes the walls by the toilet bowl with Mr. Clean.
Koroseal/Sanitas is now in the running for the coveted parodi award 2010 given to those who so disrespect wallcoverings that their actions will likely send us back to the Wallpaper Dark Ages (1984-2006.) For now, a Bronx cheer to Sanitas.
